The Board of Directors of Grand Rapids Civic Theatre announced today that Erik Wolenberg has departed as Executive Director after nearly two years of service to the organization. During his tenure, Wolenberg led the Theatre through a period of significant transition, helping strengthen financial operations, advance organizational planning, and lay the groundwork for Grand Rapids Civic Theatre’s long-term strategic plan, while supporting the launch of the organization’s landmark Centennial Season during the continued growth of Civic’s educational and artistic programs.

“It has been a privilege to serve an organization that means so much to our community,” said Wolenberg. “I am grateful to the staff, volunteers, board members, students, patrons, and supporters who make Civic such a special place. With its talented team and dedicated community, I am confident the Theatre’s future remains bright as it enters its Centennial Season.” The Board thanks Erik for his contributions and wishes him continued success in his future endeavors.

Recently, the Board formally announced the appointment of Allyson Paris as Artistic Director of Grand Rapids Civic Theatre. Allyson rejoined the Theatre in August 2025 as Interim Artistic Director, and in the time since has made a remarkable impact on the organization’s artistic and community programming. Under her leadership, Civic has introduced an understudy and alternate program for mainstage productions, developed new pathways for students and young artists through the School for Theatre Arts, City Wide Drama Club, and Young Artist Studio, and curated what promises to be an extraordinary Centennial Season. The Board is thrilled to welcome her to this role permanently.

“We are grateful for Erik’s service and support, and we know that he will continue to be a positive force in the Grand Rapids community with his future plans. During his time with us, Erik did many great things for the Theatre and, in particular, guiding its plan for growth, including bringing back Allyson as Interim Artistic Director. The Board was very pleased to appoint her Artistic Director ahead of our historic Centennial. With inaugural productions and returning favorites, our 100th season will showcase the best and brightest of our community and their stories, made possible by the support of that community,” shared Narisa Bandali, Chairperson of the Board.

Grand Rapids Civic Theatre’s Centennial Season opens September 11, 2026 with the theatre’s inaugural production of Come From Away, marking the beginning of a landmark year for one of West Michigan’s most beloved cultural institutions. The season will also include Dragons Love Tacos, Annie, A Chorus Line, Dear Evan Hansen, Disney’s Finding Nemo JR, Our Town, and Les Miserables, along numerous celebratory events and programs to celebrate 100 years, including with a free Community Block Party on September 27, 2026.
