Beginning Tap for Adults:
For dancers with little or no tap experience. Students learn tap basics such as a brush, ball change, flap, and shuffle! Tap shoes recommended but not required.

Intermediate Tap for Adults:
For dancers with at least 2 years tap experience. Students will work on steps such as a Maxi Ford, Paddle Turn, Shim Sham, Time Step, and Turns. Tap shoes required.

Dance placement videos can be found at the bottom of this page, if you are unsure which level is most appropriate for you. We also welcome folks to try the Beginning class for the first week of term and move to Intermediate, if needed.

FAMOUS TAP CHOREOGRAPHY

For dancers with at least 3 years tap experience or instructor approval. This class is intended for Intermediate and Advanced tappers! Learn famous tap choreography from Broadway shows and popular movie musicals, like Anything Goes, 42nd Street, and Singin’ in the Rain. Students will work on improvisational tap, trick steps, paradiddle variations, and more! Tap shoes required.

MUSICAL THEATRE DANCE

for Adults

Beginning Musical Theatre Dance:
For dancers with little to no dance experience. Students learn basic musical theatre dance techniques & steps. A useful starting place for any student interested in Musical Theatre performance. Split sole jazz shoes or ballet slippers recommended.

Intermediate Musical Theatre Dance:
For dancers with at least 2 years of experience. Students will work on character development through movement as well as more advanced musical theater steps and styles. Split sole jazz shoes, ballet slippers, or character shoes required.

INTERMEDIATE CONTEMPORARY DANCE TECHNIQUE

for Adults

This class is a blend of classical modern technique and contemporary styles. Through fall and recovery, contraction and release, we will discover and uncover new movement pathways and explore our authentic voices. Expect floorwork, center technique and sweeping phrases that move through space. Students should have at least two years of contemporary, modern, ballet, jazz or musical theatre dance technique prior to registration.

POP STAR DANCE ACADEMY

for Adults

Have you ever wanted to dance like the pop stars you see on tourβ€”or the iconic backup dancers behind them? Maybe you’re inspired by the queens of Six the Musical or artists like KATSEYE. Now you can.

In this elective dance class, students will explore concert-style pop choreography in a variation-based format. Each student or small group will be assigned a different pop icon or group Or create their own and learn a piece inspired by artists performance style, movement quality, and stage presence. By the end of the session, every group will have a fully developed dance, just like preparing for a live concert or tour performance.

Our adult dance class selections at Grand Rapids Civic Theatre are carefully crafted to offer both basic skills for those new to dance and advanced skills for experienced artists looking to hone their craft. Our instructors have worked professionally and on college campuses both in West Michigan and all over the country.

They showcase what students should feel comfortable working on at an intermediate level. Please keep in mind that instructors may ask students to move to an alternate class after the first week depending on the level of students registered during the term.
