Three Special Opportunities:

BENEATH THE STAGE: Pit Orchestra Workshop for Grades 8-12

Interested in the role of a Pit Musician and the musical magic they create?

This is your opportunity to join professional musicians beneath the Meijer Majestic stage as they perform a live Broadway score! Beneath the Stage: Pit Orchestra Workshop is an immersive, behind-the-scenes experience to witness everything that goes into being in a Grand Rapids Civic Theatre orchestra.

Join the musicians for a Q&A, tour our historic performing space, and sit in the pit for a live performance of Beautiful: The Carole King Musical! You also have the opportunity to watch the Sitzprobe on Saturday, May 25, when the cast and orchestra rehearse together for the first time.

There's a game for that

Some of the best ideas, tightest connections and lightest moments happen when we play. This workshop will give you an abundance of games and exercises to create a more playful environment at school, in the office, on stage, or at home!

    Instructor: Eirann Betka-Pope

    Eirann Betka-Pope (they/them) is excited to be in their 15th year teaching theatre, 12 of which have been right here at GRCT! They love producing, directing, acting, and writing, and hosting events, and won the 2022 and 2023 Ten-For-All Playwriting Festival. Eirann also serves as the Development Manager for Grand Rapids Pride Center, and is co-owner of Betka-Pope Productions. In their spare time, they enjoy traveling, cooking, and working on house projects with their wife Jenna and dog, Cornelius.

    Interested in volunteering in our scene shop?  Want to build a set or create something for your home?  Join us for this basic woodworking workshop in which students learn basic shop safety, become familiar with commonly used tools, and make a pair of wooden bookends to take home!

    **Students will need to wear close-toed shoes, tie up or pull back long hair, and not wear dangly jewelry.
    **Safety gear, including safety glasses and ear plugs, will be provided.

    Tools to be used:

    • Compound miter saw
    • Table saw
    • Band saw
    • Jig saw
    • Sanding block
    • Clamps
    • Pneumatic nailer

    Instructor: Malcolm Campbell

    Malcolm earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Theatre from Western Michigan University and his Master’s Degree in the same from Northern Illinois University, both emphasizing technical direction. He has worked in the Chicagoland area for the Fox Valley Repertory Theatre, Von Heidecke Ballet, and others. Malcolm has been with Grand Rapids Civic Theatre since 2016.

    Malcolm finds teaching at the Civic highly rewarding. Encouraging young professionals and developing artists is the loftiest height to which one can aspire.
