School of Theatre Arts
The award winning, Grand Rapids Civic Theatre School of Theatre Arts offers the most comprehensive community theatre education program in the country.
Classes and Day Camps
The School of Theatre Arts offers a variety of acting, musical theatre, improv, and voice classes for ages 4 through adult. Classes occur as 3,5,8, or 10 week sessions and are offered in the fall, winter and spring. All classes are lead by experienced theatre professionals. The School also provides special workshops and mini-classes on select topics throughout the year. See the Course Guide for registration details and to select which class is right for you.
Take a Chance: Jumping in with Character

Instructor: Mackenzie McElroy
Description: Learning tools to help create lightning quick characters and bringing them to life using improvisational games and scenes!
About the instructor: Mackenzie MacElroy
Mackenzie McElroy graduated from the Aquinas College Theatre Program with an emphasis in Performance, Acting and Directing. She fell in love with Children’s Theatre after studying it in college, and her life has never been the same! A few favorite Directing and Assistant Directing credits include: Awesome Allie: First Kid Astronaut for Civic Theatre; A Sleeping Beauty Somewhere in Time(Grand Award), The Mystic Tale of Aladdin (Grand Award), Boeing Boeing, and Noises Off for Circle Theatre; Troll and the Elephant Prince for Aquinas (Grand Award Nomination); Crooked for GRCC; and Next Fall for Actors’ Theatre. Mackenzie is no stranger to the stage outside of directing, having appeared as Carrie White in Carrie the Musical, Holly in The Wedding Singer (at Circle Theatre), The Storyteller in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Goth Chick in Heathers the Musical (at Actors’ Theatre), and Agatha Makin in The Hatpin (at GRCC). Besides teaching at the Civic Theatre School of Arts, she has a strong Improvisation background – stemming from five years on the Aquinas College Improv Troupe (“In Case of Emergency”) and being a founding member of the Grand Rapids troupe “No Outlet.”

About the Instructor: Andrew Schneider
Since the age of nine, Andrew has been heavily involved in the Grand Rapids Theatre Community in many facets. At the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre he is on the school faculty teaching classes in musical theatre performance and serves as the outreach coordinator for the Traveling Troupe program. As an actor he most recently appeared onstage as “Luther Billis” in South Pacific at GR Civic for which he was a Grand Rapids Grand Awards nominee: Best Supporting Actor in a Musical. Andrew worked professionally on the 2009 National Tour of Dreamgirls serving on the Stage Management team and toured the country with the off-broadway hit, Late Night Catechism. Regionally he has appeared in Urinetown and Evita with Mason Street Warehouse in Saugatuck. Other selected credits include LiveArts for the Grand Rapids Symphony, Stage Director for Footloose at GR Civic and upcoming will serve as Assistant Director/Stage Manager for Over the River and Through the Woods at GR Circle Theatre.
Summer Theatre Arts Day Camps
These week long day camps are the perfect way to keep your child’s creativity active while making new friends and learning important life-skills. All Summer Theatre Day Camps are staffed by experienced theatre professionals. During the week, your child will experience many aspects of theatre and at the end of the week, perform in a play on the beautiful Meijer Majestic Stage, for you and your family. Tuition includes a commemorative camp T-shirt.

Programming and Outreach
Summer Repertory Theatre Intensive Program
Summer Repertory Theatre Intensive (SRTI) is designed for students who are looking for in-depth training in either performance or production and who have completed 6th grade but not yet started college Professional Theatre staff and special guests from all over the Midwest will provide training, guidance, opportunity, and insight into what it takes to achieve the highest level of artistic excellence in the theatre! Performance-track students will be cast in one of the two SRTI productions, and serve as crew for the other. Production-Track students will be an integral part of the design and build process for both productions, and serve as crew heads for the performances. ALL students will take intensive, conservatory style courses in the afternoons followed by rehearsal or production time in the evening. The SRTI productions are part of GRCT’s Mainstage Season and reflect the high quality performance and production values that GRCT audiences have come to expect!

School Closing Policy
In the event that a closing must occur, students will be notified through the email given at registration and notice will be displayed both onscreen and online at WOOD-TV8 and WZZM-13.
In the event that a class is cancelled, every effort will be made to schedule a make-up class, according to instructor and space availability.

Refund and Cancellation Policy
In the event that the Theatre must cancel a course, a full refund will be issued.
If a student requests a withdrawal, on or before the first day of class, a full refund less $10 cancellation fee will be issued. Withdrawals before the second day of class are refunded at 75% of the enrollment cost. Refund is forfeited if withdraw occurs on the second day of class or later.
Exceptions include Performance Classes: No refunds are issued after the final registration date. Summer Day Camps, no refunds are issued after the start date of camp.
