The School of Theatre Arts

The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre School of Theatre Arts is nationally recognized for its extensive curriculum and innovative teaching design. We began in 1983 with two acting classes for teen-agers. Today, the School of Theatre Arts offers four full terms of classes - fall, winter, spring, and summer. Making a mask

A Complete Curriculum

The school offers a complete range of acting, dance, and technical theatre classes for preschool children through adults. Each year, over 1,800 students attend classes and workshops at the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre. During the fall, winter, and spring terms, twenty to thirty instructors conduct classes, workshops, and seminars. In the summer term as many as thirty-five instructors teach the regular classes, the summer theatre camps, Summer Stock, and special programs.

Workshops

Workshop in progress Throughout the year, the school presents intensive one-day workshops in all theatre-related topics - everything from directing to theatre make-up to lighting design to stage combat. The workshops are taught by instructors from the Arts Community at large - as well as the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre professional staff.

The Traveling Troupe

The School of Theatre Arts presents the Traveling Troupe, an outreach program to promote theatre awareness in the Grand Rapids community. Every spring for the past 12 years, a group of teen actors has toured the city, bringing live theatre to schools, retirement homes, and local organizations - all free of charge. Last year, the troupe played to over 4,000 people in the Grand Rapids area.

The Traveling Troupe is comprised of student performers, ages 12 to 19 years old who are accepted into the troupe by audition. The troupe varies in number, usually between twelve and sixteen performers. Once accepted, the students are divided into two ensembles. Each ensemble travels to surrounding-area elementary schools. Each troupe performs once a week, on average. The Traveling Troupe presents a new show every year; productions can range from published and produced works to original productions, conceived, written, and directed by the troupe itself.

Summer Day Camps

The School of Theatre Arts also offers 9 weeks of theatre summer day camps for kids of all ages.

Kidstuff Kamp gives the very young performer (for students who have completed 4 year old, Preschool, Kindergarten or 1st grade) a whole week to explore, rehearse, have fun, and perform. The children are divided into groups according to age. Each child has his or her own role and also participates in an ensemble scene.

Theatre Arts Day Camp, Jr. is for students who have completed 2nd or 3rd grade and lets them explore the process of putting on a play, including what goes on backstage as well as on stage. The camp culminates with a performance written specifically for the camp.

Theatre Arts Day Camp is for older kids (who have completed grades 4, 5, 6 or 7) and gives young actors a more structured introduction to the fundamental elements of theatre: acting, costumes, song & dance, and props and publicity. The camp culminates with a performance on the Civic's main stage.

Phase II offers a bigger challenge for the more experienced acting student (must have finished grades 7, 8, 9 or 10 and have attended 2 years of Theatre Arts Day Camp). They are divided into groups and audition for roles in a short play that each group produces. They find costumes, build their set, get props - all geared toward a performance on the final day of camp that is free of charge to the public.

A Part of the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre Identity

Since it's inception, the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre School of Theatre Arts has grown to become a vital and integral part of Grand Rapids Civic Theatre. We are proud to have enriched the talents, skills - and the lives - of the thousands of students who have studied with us over the years.
